Working with a master, George James January 28, 2011Patton's Postspattonh George critiques one of my paintings under the mirror so students can listen and learn. My oft-painted market women were integrated into the overall design in the style of George James. It was really fun to try to subordinate them as just more pieces in the compositional puzzle. Using a car squeegie to pull shapes into the wet paint on the plastic surface created large, flat, textured areas that held the composition in place visually. Five days working with master yupo artist George James was great opportunity to hear his philosophy and study his unique ways of painting watercolor onto yupo (the plastic sheets of “paper” that don’t absorb the paint and therefore have an intense finish.
