New Opening at the Morean Arts Center

Proud to be in such good company!

I opened an exhibit of watercolors only at the Morean this past Saturday for Artwalk, along with encaustic artist Leslie Newmann and two glass artists. We were all lucky enough to open in conjunction with a very successful new exhibit that drew a record crowd of 300+ from the Tampa Bay area on Satturday night. Four of us are part of the Morean’s new program, Salon30, individual exhibits that hang for 30 dyas and are then replaced by other artists. We are all eager for this program to succeed. It means income for the Morean and exposure for artists who seldom show outside their studios due to high gallery commissions. You rent your chosen space and no commissions are taken. If I sell one painting, I’ll pay for my costs. If not, I’ve always got my private open studios at McNulty Lofts for interested visitors and collectors.

Art is a powerful and personal communicator: What was her secret? What are ours? Some should be kept forever.

The Artist Magazine March 2011 issue names me as one of the top ten artists in America over the age of 60. I’m not sure work should be judged in age categories, but, nevertheless, I AM THRILLED!!!

Will our cyber-savvy generation mature very differently from us?

"Cyber Pals" reflects on the intense social contact from an isolated space. How will their adult world differ from ours? What will the changes in social skills and values be? I hope I'm around long enough to see the results, good or bad. By the way, this painting was accepted into the 2011 Juried Art Show at the Studio@620.

Working with a master, George James

George critiques one of my paintings under the mirror so students can listen and learn.: My oft-painted market women were integrated into the overall design in the style of George James. It was really fun to try to subordinate them as just more pieces in the compositional puzzle.

Using a car squeegie to pull shapes into the wet paint on the plastic surface created large, flat, textured areas that held the composition in place visually.

Five days working with master yupo artist George James was great opportunity to hear his philosophy and study his unique ways of painting watercolor onto yupo (the plastic sheets of “paper” that don’t absorb the paint and therefore have an intense finish.
